Obituary

“For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”
—Psalm 90:9-10
William Robinson was born August 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Luke S. Robinson. He had one brother, Elden Keith Robinson.
William was educated in the school system of Philadelphia, graduating from West Philadelphia High School in 1946. He was a member of varsity Track and Field, Cross Country and Basketball for which he excelled.
As a young adult William received Jesus Christ as his personal savior and was baptized at White Rock Baptist Church, by the Reverend W. C. Williamson. He was a long time member, over sixty plus years. He belonged to the sheepfold of Abraham/Joseph.
William was employed by SEPTA. He started as a trolley car driver with PTC and retired from SEPTA as a transportation Supervisor with over twenty-five years of dedicated service.
In 1949, William enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953.
September 22, 1951 William was united in Holy Matrimony to Gloria Paige. They were blessed to experience fifty-two years of marriage. This union was blessed with the birth of two children: one daughter Deborah and one son Darryl. His wife preceded him in death in 2004.
William was very active in civic and community organizations. He participated in the March on Washington with Martin Luther King in 1963. In the City of Philadelphia he served as the 60th Ward, 15th Division Committeeman for over twenty years and then served as 60th Ward Leader until his health failed. He supported his community and particularly the neighborhood children. William was a member of The Light of Elmwood #45 - Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliate.
Family and friends remember William as a fan of sports - Eagles, Phillies and Lakers, and golf. He sang and played piano in his younger years. His nicknames were: Robbie and Drill Sergeant. He was a direct, in your face kind of guy, but if you were in need he would give you the shirt off his back. William was particular about his clothes and attire. He loved ball caps. He regularly attended bible study sessions at various locations.
On September 29, 2018 at Bryn Mawr Extended Care facility, after a lengthy illness William left this earthly life and entered into eternal rest.
“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”
Second Corinthians 5:1
He is survived by: his daughter Deborah Jowers (James) and son Darryl; grandchildren, Marques Hindsman, Darnell Hindsman (Erica), Miles Robinson and Spencer Robinson; great-grandchildren, Mihanna Hindsman, Michael Lawrence, Amari Floyd, Aries Hindsman and Destiny Hindsman; brother, Elden Keith Robinson (Kathleen); a special friend Charmaine Wilson; other relatives, neighbors, friends and his White Rock Church Family
