Obituary

THOMAS WILLIAM MOORE, JR. was born January 13, 1944 in Philadelphia to the late Thomas and Geraldine Moore. He was the second of six children.
Tommy, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, was a fun loving young man with a big smile and a quick wit. A lover of books from an early age, he was an exceptionally gifted student. He excelled throughout his education in the Philadelphia public schools and was awarded a four year college scholarship by the Sears Roebuck Foundation, one of only thirteen high school students, and the only African American, selected from the city’s public and diocesan school systems.
Thomas served in the United States Air Force in Panama, then returned home to earn his bachelors degree from Temple University. After distinguishing himself at Temple, he traveled to the Midwest to accept another academic scholarship, earning both a Masters of Public Administration and a law degree from the University of Illinois. While pursuing his studies at Illinois, Thomas accepted an appointment as Human Relations Officer for the City of Champaign-Urbana. He was the first African American to hold this position. In this role he enforced equal employment opportunity laws and opened new doors for minorities through fair hiring and promotion practices throughout local government.
After graduating law school Thomas returned to his beloved Philadelphia to practice law. For the next twenty years he worked tirelessly to earn a well deserved reputation as one of the city’s most effective, respected and sought-after defense attorneys. After retiring from practice, Thomas spent his time enjoying his family and friends, playing games, taking the occasional fishing trip, and in the company of his treasured and ever-expanding book collection.
Thomas is survived by four children, Thomas III, Phillip, Vincent and Dominique; siblings Adrienne (Ronald), Bruce, and Janelle (Umar); sisters in law Vernell and Patricia; grandchildren Jada and baby Mulan (born just 7 days after his passing); longtime companion Diane, to whom his family owes a lasting debt of gratitude; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Geraldine Moore, and his brothers Ronald and Gerald. He leaves an enduring legacy to the family he loved, the friends and colleagues he cherished, and the community he served.
