Born in Philadelphia
Resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Shirley Elizabeth Burnett was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 23, 1935, the second child of Julia Elizabeth Butler Witherspoon and Elvin Witherspoon.
She was raised in Philadelphia with her older brother, Elvin Jr.
Shirley was a disciple of Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church since childhood attending Church School as well as singing on the choir, an usher, and the Young People’s Department of the Women’s Missionary Society. She was one of the first recipients of a scholarship.
She later joined Mt. Airy Church of God In Christ and served there for six years. She then joined St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with her family and served there with their Young People’s Department, Altar Guild and Boy Scouts Troop #632. In 1985 she returned to Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church serving as a Stewardess and in the Hospitality Ministry.
Shirley received her formal education through the Philadelphia Public School System, graduating from West Philadelphia High School. In 1953 Shirley graduated from the Nursing Program at Philadelphia General Hospital becoming a Registered Nurse.
She worked as a registered nurse for sixty years, and worked the last twenty - nine years of her career as a Clinical Instructor at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center. The Philadelphia Geriatric Center later became known as Temple Continuing Care Center.
Shirley loved nursing and always said: “We need to keep the “N” in nursing in today’s world.”
Shirley was united in holy matrimony to David George Burnett Sr. for sixty years. From this union five children were born: David George Jr., Sharon Murial, Michael Jay, Glenn Arnold, and Marla Elizabeth.
Shirley loved nursing; it was a large part of who she was. In addition to nursing she had a passion for sewing. One of her greatest joys was seeing the look on her children’s faces when they woke up in the morning to see a new article of clothing she had made and was freshly pressed just for them. She also had a love for art and gardening. Enjoying eating her fresh grown tomatoes with a pinch of salt was quite enjoyable.
Her son, David George Jr. and daughter, Sharon Murial predeceased her.
She leaves to cherish her memory: husband, David George Sr.; three children, Michael Jay, Glenn Arnold Sr. and Marla Elizabeth; seven grandchildren, Nehemiah, Glenn Arnold Jr., Amber, Christian, Allanah, Neylan Burnett-Olidge and Kahlil Taylor; three daughters-in-law, Gwendolyn Burnett, Marlene Orosco and Constance Burnett; one nephew, cousins, and a host of friends and those who have blessed her life with cheer, love, and joy. May they be forever Blessed.
A light from our household has gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
Sorrowfully Submitted,
The Family
