Obituary

During the predawn hours, on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, Roland Leander Williams, Sr. passed away in his sleep with a smile on his lips. A Philadelphia native, he was at home in the city when he crossed the great divide.

He graduated as class president from Sulzberger Middle School before he attended Central High School. Then, he served his country in the Army at the height of the Korean War. Later, he became a top-flight probation officer for his hometown, where he also achieved great distinction as a proud member of the Prince Hall Masons. His favorite activity was lifting spirits with humor.

Roland was the oldest of five children born to Leander Williams and Estelle King. Three of his siblings, Juanita, Samuel, and Charles, went to heaven ahead of him. He is survived by his youngest brother Glenn.

In his wake, he leaves a devoted spouse, Felicia, who appeared as a blessing in his life, after a stroke took his loving first wife, Florence. He had six children Ellen, Renee, Roland, Jr., Melvin, Marvin, and Sheryl, plus two stepchildren Ily and Feil. All of his children thought the world of him. In addition, he leaves behind nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren whom he filled with joy.

In effect, Roland started a great, big family that grew beyond relatives to include hundreds whom he inspired with wit steeped in wisdom. He believed his family may not have it all together, but together they have it all. His relatives and the hundreds of others whom he treated like family will miss him dearly. No doubt, now in heaven, he jokes with angels.
