Obituary

Melvina Frances Owens was born to the late Rosalee and Frank Simmons on September 17, 1929 in Charleston, South Carolina.
She received her early education in the Charleston, South Carolina public school system. After moving to Philadelphia, PA, she graduated from Bok Vocational Technical High School.
Melvina accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age. She attended Morris Brown A. M. E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina. After moving to Philadelphia, PA, she joined Waters Memorial A. M. E. Church. Later she joined Greater Mt. Olive A. M. E. Church and Morris Brown A. M. E. Church. On October 12, 1986 she joined Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church under the pastorate of the late James L. Dandridge.
At Mt. Pisgah she was a Class Leader, Stewardess, served in the Flower Club, and Bereavement Ministry. She shared her lovely singing voice on the Senior Choir. In the Drama Ministry, she played “Isabelle” in “Resurrection”, and the guard in Rosa Parks, two of Latisha Arrington’s plays. God laid it on her heart to sell the flowers she made for Mt. Pisgah’s Ministries Annual Days to buy Bibles that filled the pews.
Melvina held a variety of jobs. She worked in the Neo-Natal Department of Philadelphia General Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide, in the retail department at Darling and Cousins Department Store and she learned to speak some Yiddish while taking care of a Jewish child. In 1965 she was hired by the Philadelphia Board of Education’s Get-Set Day Care Program at Mt. Pisgah A. M. E. Church as a culinary coordinator. Because she was such an excellent cook, Melvina’s supervisor enjoyed her cooking therefore she scheduled her special meetings at Mt. Pisgah’s Get Set Center. She retired from the Philadelphia School District after giving over thirty years of service.
On August 9, 1951 Melvina married Frederick D. Owens. From this union three children were born, Linda, Robert and Virjette.
Melvina served as a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years. She was also a seamstress and enjoyed cooking, reading, decorating and making corsages and boutonnieres, for church members. She would always be seen sitting in her car safeguarding her neighborhood, while reading her bible, listening to religious radio shows and writing poems. She had many neighborhood friends who would stop by her car to chat with her. That was a testimony to her engaging personality. She loved her family very much and made many sacrifices for them over the years.
Her husband, Frederick; her three siblings, Thelma, Lillian and Elliot; and her son, Robert, preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Linda Owens and Virjette LaCour (David); two grandchildren, Malachi and Araina Owens; one great grandson, Malachi Owens, his siblings and mother; and a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
