The light reflected bright when LONNIE HARRISON KERSEY entered the universe on August 14, 1950 in Philadelphia. He was the only son of the late John P. and Ruth Reed Kersey. On the morning of Tuesday, July 31, God whispered ‘Peace be Still’ and Lonnie transitioned in his beloved hometown.
Lonnie attended Philadelphia public schools and graduated from West Philadelphia High School. He later matriculated at the Community College of Philadelphia.
He met the love of his life, Pearline McNealy, in 1965. After an extended courtship, they married in December 2002.
Lonnie was a spiritual man. He loved history and music. He studied religions and was an avid reader. As a young man, he had a fondness for jazz and the popular R&B tunes of the day. He was very intellectual and loved politics. Lonnie also gained institutional knowledge that contributed to his deep thought provoking insight. He was an avid chess player and an ardent Eagles fan. He loved his family and was very proud of them.
As a young man, Lonnie utilized his entrepreneurial skills by earning money shining shoes in downtown Philadelphia. He was proud to make money, and enjoyed sharing what he earned with his mother He also held various jobs including: the Bellevue Stratford Hotel, Sleighton Farms School, and as an Uber driver before it became what it is known today.
He was predeceased by two sisters - Shirley Reed Gunn and Johnnie Kersey - and daughter Clareatha Purnell.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife, Pearline; daughter Rosalee Anderson; 5 sisters - Linda Etheridge (Anthony); Valerie Dobson (Kimble); Karen Hill (Brooks); Mattie Kersey; and Maria Kersey; 11 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and life long friends. He had a special bond with his devoted granddaughter Clareatha McNealy, who he nicknamed his Bunny.
