Obituary

LENA KELSEY was born March 23, 1929, in Richland County, South Carolina to the late Irene P. Richardson and the late Richmond Richardson. She departed this life on July 5, 2019 at her home in Philadelphia, PA. She was preceded in death by five siblings: Mary Richardson, Katherine Richardson, Marion Richardson, Helen Mae Bracey, and Geraldine Scott. She is preceded in death by one son Robert Allen. She is survived by siblings: Ellen (George) Crooks of Philadelphia, PA, Willie Mae (Elijah) Smith, Irene Rankins, William (Irene) Richardson, and Casanova (Rosalind) Richardson all of Columbia, South Carolina.
In her early twenties she traveled extensively throughout the New England states spending time in places like Boston, and New Hampshire. She finally settled in Philadelphia and began to build a life. She was employed by The School District of Philadelphia and retired after years of service. She was passionate about her local neighborhood of West Philadelphia, and was commonly known by the name “Snooks”.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Leon Kelsey the son of Bishop Samuel L. Kelsey. To this union, three children were born. She was a 40 plus year member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA to which she served on various committees.
She leaves to cherish her sweet memories, four daughters: Antoinette Brewington of Philadelphia, PA. Deena (Raymond) Roberts of Ambler, PA. Cheryl Kelsey of Philadelphia, PA and Dr. Althea (Kenneth) Chism of Palmyra, NJ. She is survived by one son: Curtis (Kimberly) Kelsey of Philadelphia, PA. Left to cherish her memoires are her grandchildren Robert (Tahirah) Williams the most senior grandchild of Houtzdale, PA. Rodney C. Kelsey of New Orleans, LA. Ivan (Christina) Woodson of Leander, TX. Charles C. Hickman, J.D., Shamssadeen N.A. Baukman, Cierra M. Adams, Kaci Kelsey, Raedeia S. Roberts, and Chase Kelsey all of Philadelphia, PA. In addition, she is survived by additional grandchildren Gladys Jackson, Johnny Jackson, and Donald Jackson all of Philadelphia, PA. She is survived in loving memory by her two great-grandsons: Aston and Mason Woodson of Leander, Texas. In addition, she is survived by a host of nieces, cousins, nephews, friends and relatives. She was like a mother to many in particular, LaTasha Bell, and DeWayne Adams both of Philadelphia, PA. She leaves behind a legacy, a love, and a family like none other.
