Obituary

John Thomas Allen was born September 10, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA from the union of Matthew Allen and Janie Ballard Allen, who preceded him in death. John was the second of five children. He peacefully went home to be with the heavenly father on October 3, 2019.
John graduated from Overbrook High School and continued his education at Cheyney University, where he successfully earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. John worked for the Philadelphia Water Department for 19 years and retired in 2007. John met his wife of 36 years, Loida Catabay Allen in Portland, Oregon, and settled together in Philadelphia.
John lived a beautiful life, always able to make others laugh and be joyous. He left an impression on others regardless of where he was. From establishing lifelong friends in Philadelphia to new friends in Africa and the Philippines, he was truly loved and never met a stranger. John was a people person. He was selfless, willing to help others, and offer guidance to others—no matter how big or small. John is considered family by many, brother to his neighbors and honorary grandfather to many children throughout the world.
Family was the most important part of John’s life. He learned many lessons from his parents during his upbringing that he went on to pass onto his children. These lessons included focusing on developing family, education, and spirit of uplifting others. John had many sayings. A common one was “All for one and one for all.”  His children have embraced this theme, always coming together to support each other in all ways. This legacy continues through them.
John was a true renaissance man of many hobbies including listening to jazz, reading, watching sports, gardening, home renovation, wine-making, and most recently building a home for his family in the Philippines, which was recently completed. He was delighted to enjoy the first set of mangoes harvested from his fruit trees, something he was particularly proud of. With each activity, his dedicated and loving wife Loida was there with him every step along the way, exemplifying the true meaning of love and being a soulmate. John would dive into each hobby with passion and dedication, ready to share that excitement and enthusiasm with all that he met.
John leaves to cherish his memory his caring wife Loida, and their three children together: Dr. John Allen of Orlando, FL (Mrs. Iverta Allen), Dr. Ranulfo Allen of Philadelphia, PA, and Janielee Allen of Philadelphia, PA; as well as his son Robert Singleton of Charlotte, NC; his four siblings: Mack Allen (Mrs. Pauline Allen) of Washington D.C., Dr. Richard Allen of Philadelphia, PA, Gloria Ross of Riverdale, GA, and Irene Thompson of Atlanta, GA; father-in-law: Mr. Didoy Catabay, mother-in-law: Mrs. Irenia Catabay, both of Portland, OR, four brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, 25 nieces and nephews, countless cousins, and numerous cherished friends including John Turner and Ronald Moore. John’s transition to eternal life reunites him with his ancestors including his beloved parents and cherished friends, Leon Inge and James Swiggett.
