JAMES ANDREW COLEMAN was born February 27, 1943 in Anderson Country, South Carolina to the late Mae Ellen Coleman. James affectionately known as "Benny" to family members received his education in the Anderson County School District in South Carolina and the School District of Philadelphia. After receiving his high school education he entered the United States Air Force where he served for four years in Japan and a mission in Vietnam, after which he left with an honorable discharge.
James accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Mountain Spring Baptist Church, in Pendleton, South Carolina. After moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he united with Vine Memorial Baptist Church under the pastoralship of the Revered Leonard George Carr.
After James returned from serving in the United States Air Force he started his career with the City of Philadelphia in November of 1969. During that time he married and had two sons, James and Erik.
As a city employee James worked in varies positions. In 1969 James started his journey working in the collections department. In1971 he began working in the health the department and retired in 2007 from the Public Health/Facility Management unit. After retirement James returned to the city as a consultant for a number of years.
In August 1977 James received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Being a graduate of the prestigious Wharton School he remained an active member of the Wharton Alumni Association.
James met the love of his life, Margaret in 1994 and later married in 2007. They loved to travel, sports, listen to jazz, dining out, and spending time with family and friends. James and Margaret supported each other in their hobbies.
James also enjoyed spending father-son quality time such as; walking in the park, playing basketball, visiting family in the South, attending Sixers games, car shows yearly, and dining out. He admired watching his grandchildren grow up and loved spending time with them. He made sure he was present for their school activities and accomplishments. James additional hobbies include playing the guitar and photography.
On the morning of Friday, May 24th, James departed this life after a brief illness. God gave his angels the charged to escort the spirit of James to his Kingdom where he had prepared a place for him to rest. God welcomed him with open arms for he was quite pleased with his life.
James Andrew Coleman leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories: his wife, Margaret; two sons James, Erik, (Jessica) of Sicklerville New Jersey; four grandchildren; Aria, Nyle, Raja, and Jayden; two aunts; Annette Johnson, and Artrell Mapp; of (Philadelphia, Pa.); one God Son Merrick Phillips Jr.; of (Columbia, South Carolina); two daughters reared by him; Jasmine Hoffman of (Downingtown, Pa.) and Yvonne Morse of (California) extended grandson Andrew Morse; one extended daughter Karla Brown, of (Cheltenham, Pa.), special co-workers (who were like his sisters), Brenda Seal and Evelyn Urquhart; cousins, and a host of family and friends.
