George Pounds was born to the late Bohanna Pounds and Beatrice Marsh on July 18, 1936 in Bradley, GA. He was the youngest of seven siblings; Bohanna Jr., Mattie, Carlton (Charles), Grace, Daisy and Obidiah. After the passing of his mother and three siblings (Bohanna Jr., Daisy and Obidiah), his father moved the family to Philadelphia. He resided in Philadelphia at the time of his departure on August 5, 2019.
George was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. He attended Sulzberger Junior High and graduated from Overbrook High School. Following high school, George worked for the John Wanamaker Department Store. He also nurtured his passion for music and was a member of a singing quartet, “The Cherokees”. It was during this time, he met Malzenia Anderson and they had a son named Tony. As a group, “The Cherokees” enlisted in the United States Army, entertaining troops in the Special Services Division. George returned to Philadelphia after his service in the military. He soon met Dorothy Baker and their union gave them a son, Eric.
George began working for the Philadelphia Housing Authority. He obtained certifications in HVAC, Plumbing and Electricity. He was known to have his nose in his books, learning all he could for these certifications. In the words of his beloved older sister Mattie, “he was always studying for the next one”. During his time in Philadelphia, George married Margie Ann Veney. Together, they had three children; Richard, April and Mark. The family moved a few times as George worked for the Cleveland Housing Authority, Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Atlanta, GA, as well as the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. George was the Chief Building Engineer at Graduate Hospital for over 30 years. Upon retirement, George and Marge moved back to Georgia where they built their dream home on land he owned.
Following the death of his wife Marge, his health began to fail and he moved back to Philadelphia to live with his eldest son, Tony and wife Carmen. His love for music remained a constant in his life. Even in his final days, he would listen to Ray Charles Radio all day long. George will be missed tremendously. He took his final breath with peace, grace and a song in his heart.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Bohanna Pounds and Beatrice Marsh; three brothers, Bohanna Jr., Carlton (Charles) and Obidiah; two sisters, Grace and Daisy.
