Mrs. Flossie L. McKnight, daughter of the late Ellen and Albert McKnight, was born June 27, 1930 in Gastonia, South Carolina.
She attended the State School for the Blind and Deaf in Raleigh, North Carolina. She went to New York and graduated from the New York School for the Deaf in New York, New York. After graduating high school, Flossie worked at the United States Marine Hospital in Staten Island, New York.
Flossie met James P. Wood and they moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1959. From this union they were blessed with three children, Lorraine, James and Richard.
Mrs. Flossie McKnight joined the National BDA (Black Advocates for the Deaf), where she was the treasurer. She also joined the BDA Senior Citizen Association. She loved to travel to the National Black Deaf Conferences held yearly at various locations nationwide.
As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the flowers that she loved so well, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
Flossie loved to cook, crochet, sew and knit. Her grandchildren were her joy. SHE LOVED HER FAMILY!
She quietly departed this life March 14, 2019 at home in the loving care of her daughter, Lorraine Duncan and her granddaughter, Lynetta Wood.
Flossie was the oldest of seven siblings; Ralph Harris, James “Snookie” Harris, Leonard Harris, Geraldine “Daa’Iyah”McKnight, Albert McKnight Jr, who all preceded her in death. Her youngest sister, Phyllis “Mahasin” McKnight, is left to celebrate her sister’s life.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children: Lorraine Wood-Duncan (Emmanuel), James Michael Wood and Richard M. Wood; her grandchildren, Lynetta Wood (who had devoted herself to the care of her grandmother until her final breath), Latasha Briggs, Aginah N. Wood and Michael Wood who proceeded her in death, Ramon, Anthony and Devon Briggs; great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Khloe, Kody Saryiah, and Sanaa.
Flossie McKnight also leaves to mourn nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of extended family and friends.
