Barbara Matheas Abele passed from this life at age 101 on October 3 at Stapeley Retirement Home was born in 1909 in Bancor, Maine, she was the daughter of Frederico and Hazel Matheas. The mother on one child, a grandmother of two and the great-grandmother of four. Barbara grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a graduate of South Philadelphia High School and Temple University where she obtained her degree in Elementary Education.
Barbara was a special education teacher whose passion motivated and inspired those just entering the field. These young teachers strived diligently to follow in her footsteps. Her students never forgot her and many maintained contact with her after retirement.
Barbara was very proud of being one of the founders of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and was the last survivor of that original group. She was also a member of the first group inducted into the Northeasteiners, Inc.
She was loved by those she met and made long lasting friendships. Her zest for life manifested itself to all. She will be sorely missed by family and friends.
Barbara was married for many to Robert W. Abele who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Daly of Philadelphia; her granddaughter, Roberta Graves and her husband Earl Graves, Jr. of Chappaqu, NY as well as four great-grandchildren, twins, Erika and Kristin Graves, Earl Graves, III and Theodore Graves and beloved niece, Hazel Douglas and nephew, Frederick Brown of California.
