Thomas Greggory
Matthews
Apr 14, 1960 — Sep 5, 2025
Philadelphia
Thomas Greggory Matthews was born April 14, 1960 in Whiteville, N.C. to the late Mattie O'dell Matthews and the late Thomas Carson Matthews. Thomas, also known as "Greg," went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 5, 2025 at 10:23 a.m.
Educated in the Philadelphia public school system at Germantown High, afterwards he attended Lincoln Tech and majored in Auto Mechanics. He then joined his father at "Thomas Auto Shop" until the passing of his father on December 13, 2010.
Thomas met his wife Mary, and in 1987 they were married. Together they raised two children, Tanieya Danielle Matthews and Thomas Greggory Matthews II. In 1999, he was baptized at ICCC "International City Community Church" by Pastor Gary O. Grier Sr. He would soon follow the teachings of Bishop Gary O. Grier Sr. after being released from jail at Embracing Truth Ministries. Thomas served on the church choir, later as Senior Maintenance Supervisor, and eventually as Assistant Operations Manager under the supervision of Gary Grier Jr.
On November 14, 2021, Thomas received his certificate of Ordination as a Deacon at Embracing Truth Ministries (ETM).
Thomas loved his Bishop and First Lady (Valencia Grier) as well as his church family. He always spoke highly of Trustee Charles Payne and Deaconess Pat Funche. Bishop Gary O. Grier Sr. and First Lady Valencia Grier had the greatest impact on his life and the choices he made after joining their ministry.
Thomas leaves to cherish his memory: two children – Tanieya and Greggory Matthews; eight grandchildren – Jenieya, Janyle, Samya, Santo, Sahir, Jahmel, Jahmal, and Jahbar; one daughter-in-law – Anne Ritchie-Matthews; stepmother – Ruthie P.S. Phillips; three sisters – Betty Reid, Loretta Matthews, and Marilyn Matthews-Ricks; one brother-in-law – Eddie Ricks; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He will be joining his mother (Mattie), father (Thomas), brother (Charles), sister (Vickie), and two nephews (Richard "Boom-Boom" and Steven "Poppy").
