RUTH F. BROWN, our beloved centenarian and the oldest known living member of the Brown Family, passed away on June 15, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ruth was born on October 11, 1921, in Accomac, Virginia to Edna and Phineas Stevens, deceased. Ruth had three sisters Inez Stevens, Mary Anna Gaines and Dorothy Hardy who preceded her in death.

As a young woman, Ruth journeyed to Philadelphia with her mother, Edna Stevens. While there, she honed her nursing skills at the Philadelphia School of Nursing, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her passion for community service led her to become a Crossing Guard for the City of Philadelphia, where she made a positive impact on countless lives.

It was her time at The Blue Note Jazz Club on Ridge Avenue, that truly ignited her spirit. At this iconic venue, Ruth had the privilege of rubbing shoulders with music legends such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Dexter Gordon, and Sonny Rollins. Her love for jazz and her warm presence endeared her to both artists and patrons alike.

Ruth's independence was legendary. Even into her 100s, she needed no assistance with daily activities—cooking, cleaning, bathing, walking, and standing. Her West Philadelphia home was a testament to her pride and resourcefulness. Ruth's unique communication style endeared her to everyone who knew her, whether she was at her best or her worst.

Generations were shaped by Ruth's legacy. She married Jesse G. Brown II, and together they raised two sons: Jesse G. Brown III ("Oscar") and Phillip F. Brown. Her family tree blossomed with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each carrying a piece of her spirit.

Ruth's impact on our community and her unwavering spirit will forever resonate. As we celebrate her life, let us remember her as a beacon of resilience, independence, and strength.
