Obituary

Ruby C. Boyd born on March 18, 1919 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was the daughter of Bertie and Pearl Chappelle. She departed this life on October 25, 2024, at the age of 105 years old where she resided at the Wesley Enhanced Living in Germantown. Ruby grew up in Philadelphia and attended Philadelphia Girls High School. Upon graduation she applied to Drexel University and was denied entry because of her race. She was determined to attend college and went onto Wilberforce University in Ohio. Ruby attended Atlanta University School of Library Science earning a Bachelor of Library Science degree. Upon returning to Philadelphia, Ruby applied for the position of Librarian and became Philadelphia's first black Librarian. She later became the first black Librarian in the School District of Philadelphia. Ruby loved the Lord and dedicated herself to Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church having joined January 1, 1929. She served as a member of the Sarah Allen Women's Missionary Society, the Senior Steward Board, member of the Historical Commission assisted in the preservation of church history with the Richard Allen Museum. Ruby was also a dedicated member of the Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha where she was a Diamond Soror, with over 75 years of active membership. Ruby was also a member of the Links, Inc. and many other civic organizations. Ruby was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend Ruby was devoted to her passion for reading and history and she will truly be missed. Ruby was preceded in death by her late husband, Thomas Boyd, daughter Winona Boyd, and her great-great grandson Mason Lee Boyd. Left to cherish her memories are her Granddaughter April Smith (David), Valerie Sterling (Marc), great-grandchildren Jasmine (Aniyah), Toni (Alex), Markeith II, Don'trell, Makaylah, DaAna, Nyla, David Jr, Great Great Grandchildren Alani, Kai, Aurora, Khari, Legend and a host of family and friends.
