Our beloved Mildred Brown was born in Philadelphia PA June 17, 1940 to the late William and Louise Roberts.

The youngest girl of 8 children, she was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system graduating in 1957 from the Murrell Dobbins AVT School.

Mildred married the late William Brown in 1957 and of that union were born their son, the late Desmond Carlton, and daughters Sheryl, Tanya and Karla. She had a second life partner the late James Newble, and of that union she bore her youngest daughter Tamika.

Mildred raised her family in the North Philadelphia area of Philadelphia while employed by the Clover Department Stores, where she moved up into a management position in the toy and sporting goods departments. She taught her daughters the value of excellence in education and character. They grew up in a household full of class, sports and music. A diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan, she instilled in the girls the importance of building upon your personal gifts, knowing there are no limitations with faith and when you try.

Mildred Brown worked tirelessly and had a long and exciting career with the national community organization the "Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now" (ACORN).She joined ACORN in the late 1970s to address community safety issues with her neighbors.She soon was elected as a Democratic committee person of her Nicetown community, joined the Philadelphia ACORN Board of Directors, and was part of many protests, marches, and meetings on housing, voting rights, safety, and community issues.She traveled the country protesting and advocating for equal rights in employment, the minimum wage act, fair housing and rights for seniors.

She was elected as Treasurer of National ACORN Board and then served two years as National President of ACORN, all the time remaining active both locally and nationally on economic justice issues.Next, she moved to Washington, DC as part of the ACORN national staff, coordinating Congressional lobbying efforts, helping push for a Living Wage campaign in St. Louis, sleeping in tents with hundreds of ACORN members on the National Mall to press for better housing, and being a respected and beloved leader in the organization.After ACORN, she was on the Boards of the Affordable Housing Centers of Pennsylvania and the nonprofit Broad St. Corporation to help improve housing opportunity in Philadelphia.

She could often be found on television testifying before the US House of Representatives and the US Senate on numerous issues affecting the plight of under-privileged citizens.Mildred was a fireball of ambition to make the lives of others happier.

She spent the past several years after her retirement caring for her family… especially her grand and great grandchildren and her companion Shiatzu, Mr. Bentley. Her family was her whole world.

To quote her…" I lived my life, traveled the world, I loved, I believed, I tried…I SUCCEEDED!"

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband William, life partner James, son Desmond Carlton, granddaughter Robyn Lau'ren and 6 of her siblings. She leaves to cherish her memories daughters, Sheryl Brown, Tanya Brown, Karla Brown, Tamika Pinkney (Wallace);12 Grandchildren -Leland Sr. (Shemene), Jalima (Eric), Tanysha, Desmond, Imani (Mujahid), Karmella, Kascion (Bernesha), Ashlie, Shatiera, Amanda, Brandon, and Shania; 1 brother - William Warren (Sharon); 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and a host of special nieces, nephews, friends and professional colleagues.
