Mary A. Sample's life began on June 4, 1942, in Galveston, Texas, born to Van Buren and Alice Ware. A dedicated student, she attended William Penn High School before pursuing higher education at both Cheyney State and Temple University. Throughout her academic career, she focused her talents on Home Economics and Mathematics, a blend of disciplines that would define her professional life.

Her career began at Einstein Hospital. Starting in the kitchen, Mary's work ethic and skill led her to become the Head Dietician. She eventually transitioned into education, joining the School District of Philadelphia at Sulzberger Middle School. It was here that she met her husband, Cranston. Mary spent the remainder of her career teaching Home Economics and Math, eventually retiring from Peirce Middle School. Her classroom was legendary; it served as a hub where students, staff, and families gathered to enjoy her exceptional cooking and engaging conversation.

Personally, Mary was the heart of her home and community. No one ever left her company hungry; she was known for always having a "to-go" plate ready and a kind word of advice for anyone in need. Outside of her hospitality, she was an avid reader and a fan of Western movies.

Mary and Cranston shared a beautiful 51-year marriage, during which they remained devoted to their children and extended family. Their shared faith led them to Mount Airy Presbyterian Church, where Mary was an active leader, serving as a Deacon and a Bible study teacher.

Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband, Cranston, daughter Sharon, brother in law Robert and nephew Tony.

Mary's legacy of love is carried in by her daughters Carol and Roslynn, son in laws Douglas and Barry, siblings Jean and Edward, sisters-in-laws Sandra and Vivian, grandchildren Jameel, Brice, Zachary, Malachi, and Celeste and nieces and nephews Cheryl, Wanda, Joyce, Ashley, Tianna, Howard, Kevin, Paul and Aaron.
