Obituary

Mary Lillian Joyner Green, daughter of the late Elard Hunter and Mattie G. Vaughan Hunter, was born February 16, 1941 in Suffolk, Virginia.

She was the second eldest of eight children, three girls and five boys. She departed at the age of 83 on May 1, 2024 at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Mary attended the Nansemond County Training School in Virginia. She completed her education in Philadelphia and took some courses at Temple University. She worked on several jobs. However, she retired from Beverly Rosemont Nursing Home after twenty-five years where she worked as a CNA. Mary received many rewards and special recognitions during her stay at Beverly Rosemont.

After retirement, she would get up early each morning to wait for the newspaper to be delivered so that she could do the crossword puzzles and the cryptograms.

Mary was preceded in death by her oldest sister, Margaret C. Hunter and one brother, Robert D. Hunter.

Mary was married at an early age to William S. Joyner. In 1956, they relocated to Philadelphia. In this union, three sons were born, Tab Jerome, William Jr. and Christopher Joyner.

She attended Metropolitan Baptist Church for many years. Marry remarried in February 1977 to Moses Green Sr. who passed on October 28, 2008.

She leaves to mourn: her three sons, Tab, William and Christopher Joyner (Sharla) all of Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Sean Joyner of Phoenix, AZ, Jalaya Joyner of Philadelphia and Xavier Joyner of Sicklerville, NJ; seven great-grandchildren, Derek Butler Jr., Dakari Dean, Amir Joyner, Mycah Joyner, Autumn Joyner, Ryene Joyner and Nyxnne Joyner; one sister, Evelyn Smith (Tomas) of Rensselaeri, NY; four brothers, Bobbie J. and LaSalle Hunter of Suffolk; Henry M. (Saundra) of Portsmouth, VA and John E. (Gladys) of Temple Hill, MD; wonderful neighbors, Faye, Flo and Andre; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
