On Friday August 23rd at 9:05 PM, Mary Carolyn (Johnson) Brown, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and sister-in-law passed away at Paoli Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. Mary was born at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, PA on March 18, 1945, to late World War 2 veteran Earl Johnson and the late Virgina (McLeod) Johnson.

Mary, who also goes by Carol, was the eldest daughter of 2 girls. She grew up with her sister Nora (Johnson) Price in Germantown, PA. In her youth she was an active member of the Girl Scouts of America. Mary was born with a special talent for art and design. She attended and graduated from Murrell Dobbins technical high school as a Commercial Art major in 1962. At Murrell Dobbins she honed her skill as an artist and designer. She would stay up late and spend many hours on her art projects that she took great pride in. Mary has always had a lifelong appreciation of art and design. After high school she immediately put her talent to work and originally started her career at Penn Emblem as a graphic designer in 1963.

Mary also enjoyed being with friends and attending the Canteen ball dances at St. Thomas Church in West Philadelphia. It was there through her cousin, David, that she met her soulmate and future husband William Brown. The two married at St. Thomas Church in Philadelphia on July 16th, 1966. Mary moved to South Carolina for a short while to be with her new husband while he was serving in the United States Army but decided to move back to the northeast shortly after moving.

In January 1968, after William completed his military service and started his career in the United States Postal Service they moved into their first apartment together on Midvale Ave in East Falls. It is there they welcomed their first child, William Fitzgerald Brown in May of 1971. They moved into a second apartment in Ashbourne Manor, before moving to a house in Berwyn, PA in 1977 where they welcomed their second child, Chad Turner Brown in August of 1977.

Throughout that time, they enjoyed being with friends and family. Mary's mother Virgina was one of 11 children, and her father Earl was one of 3 children, which meant that Mary had many cousins whom she was very close to. The family would often take trips together including summer and winter ski trips to the Pocono mountains. Mary's father Earl and mother Virginia also purchased a summer home for family to enjoy in Wildwood, NJ. Throughout the years Mary, her sister Nora and family would enjoy summers in Wildwood, NJ.

Mary was a truly talented individual and throughout her career she had many roles. In the mid 70's she worked at GE as a case worker. After working for GE, she put her artistic talents to work again as a graphic designer with various graphic design jobs including working as a freelance graphic artist. She has worn many hats and has worked as a dental assistant, realtor and in the Library of Rosemont College. On top of working, she often took college classes at the same time. Towards the end of her career Mary was focused on working with elementary school students including working in the after-school program at the Shipley school in Bryn Mawr, PA.

Mary was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She absolutely adored her 2 grandchildren India (18) and Alex (7). She was also a passionate music lover, and her favorite genre was R&B, especially songs from the 1970's, 80's and 90's. Her favorite group was Earth, Wind and Fire, who she would listen to frequently as well as see in concert.

Mary is survived by her husband William Brown; sons, Fitz and Chad Brown; daughters in law, Carolyn and Marina Brown; grandchildren, India and Alex Brown; sister, Nora Price; brother-in-law, Calvin Price; niece, Marissa (Price) Brennan; her husband Andrew Brennan and son Oscar Brennan.
