Jeanette E.
Smith
Mar 7, 1940 — Aug 11, 2022
Jeanette E Smith was born to the late Elizabeth (Addie), and Robert Smith in St. Augustine, Florida on March 7, 1940. Jeanette has two siblings, the late Joan White and Constance Ashmore. Jeanette was involved with the church at an early age and accepted Jesus Christ as her savior. Jeanette and the family relocated to Philadelphia at an early age where she was educated in the Philadelphia public school system. Jeanette attended Barry Elementary and Sayre Middle Schools. Jeanette went on to attend Overbrook High School, where she met the love her life Howard L. Smith. Jeanette and Howard were high school sweethearts. They went on to marry on September 7, 1963. They have been married ever since. Jeanette and Howard have one son, Eric S. Smith. Jeanette began her employment career at Lit Brothers and later moving over to Strawbridge's and Clothier, before settling for a 30 plus year career at Beneficial Savings Bank. Jeanette eventually retired from Beneficial, only to get a retirement job with a bus company Philly Trans as a bus aide. Through out all of her employment, she sold Avon for years. Jeanette loved to sell Avon to people. She was a people's person. Jeanette loved to cook and always hosted annual holiday dinners, Thanksgiving and Christmas every year. She would always help with other family dinners with her infamous Mac and cheese, greens and sweet potatoes. Anyone who came to dinner always wanted to know when the next dinner was after having a taste of one or all of those dishes. After retiring from cooking, Jeanette turned to shopping to occupy her time. Jeanette was a caring person. When her mother became ill, Jeanette became her caregiver. After her mother's death, she helped caring for her father until his death. She also helped to care for her brother-in- law until she was unable to, all while taking care of her husband with his developing health issues. "To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors". Jeanette was very private. She kept her mounting health issues close to the vest. Jeanette moved to Delaware with her husband to be closer to their only son once her health issues became rapidly evident. She stayed with her son and his family until her death. She was surrounded by her husband, son and daughter-in-law at the time or her passing. Jeanette was preceded in death by her mother Elizabeth Smith; father, Robert Smith; and sister, Joan White. Jeanette leaves to mourn her memory: her only child, Eric Smith; her daughter-in-law, Rokeda Newsuan-Smith; her grandchildren, Eric Smith Jr., Lanay Smith, Stephfan Smith, Devon Gordon and Desean Smith; her sister, Constance Ashmore; her nieces, Cathy White and Renee Ashmore; her nephews, Nate and Sheldon Ashmore; a host of great grandchildren, cousins, great nieces and nephews, friends, co-workers.
