Hence Nathaniel Scranton was born on February 21, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Margaret Anderson and Le-Roy Robert Scranton. He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and graduated from John Bartram High School.

Following high school, Hence enlisted in the United States Army, where he faithfully served his country and received an honorable discharge. His military service was an important chapter in a life marked by dedication, responsibility, and service to others. After completing his military service, Hence continued his education in electrical engineering- pursuing studies at Drexel University, Community College of Philadelphia, and the University of New Mexico.

Hence went on to become a skilled electrician, building a long and distinguished career in his profession. For more than three decades, he worked as an electrician for the Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) where his knowledge and expertise were reflected in his many years of dedicated service. He also worked at the Philadelphia International Airport, continuing to put his technical abilities and experience to work throughout his career.

Hence later became a devoted member of Elmwood Community Methodist Church. He served as a member of the Trustee Board and as Musical Director under the leadership of the late Reverend Gabriel Hardeman Jr.

Hence was also a faithful member of Canaan Baptist Church, where he continued his commitment to serving God and his church family. He generously shared his time, talents, and knowledge by assisting with the electrical and operational needs of the church. Whether his service was visible to others or took place quietly behind the scenes, Hence was always willing to lend his skills wherever they were needed.

Outside of his work and service, Hence truly enjoyed life. He was an enthusiastic Philadelphia sports fan who loved cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies.

Hence was also an avid and accomplished bowler, a pastime in which he took great pride and demonstrated considerable skill. He enjoyed the fellowship and friendly competition that came with bowling. He was also an avid pinochle card player. Whether enjoying a good game of cards, bowling, following his favorite Philadelphia teams, sharing his musical talents, or spending time with family and friends, Hence appreciated the moments that brought people together.

These interests were part of the many dimensions of Hence's life a hardworking electrician, veteran, musician, church servant, sports enthusiast, accomplished bowler, card player, devoted husband, loving father, and cherished family man. Music held a special place in Hence's heart and was an important part of his life and ministry. His musical gifts allowed him to serve others, worship God, build lasting relationships, and contribute meaningfully to his churches and community.

Hence shared a beautiful and devoted life with his loving wife, Carmella Scranton, whose companionship brought him comfort, strength, and joy throughout the years. Their marriage was built upon love, faith, mutual respect, and a commitment to family that remained steadfast through life's many seasons. Carmella held a treasured place in Hence's heart, and the love and memories they shared will forever remain an enduring part of his legacy.

Hence's family was important to him. Among the greatest blessings in Hence's life was his beloved son, Clifford Scranton, whom he cherished and loved dearly. The bond they shared brought Hence tremendous joy and remained a treasured part of his life.

Hence leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving wife, Carmella Scranton; his son, Clifford Scranton; his daughters, Leslie Wood and Tracy Rowland, and son-in-law Jeffrey Rowland; his sisters, Carole McNeal and Vivian Rochelle Scranton, both of Los Angeles, California; his nieces, Diane McNeil of Los Angeles, California and Joan Edmundson of Selma, North Carolina, and her husband, Tony Edmundson; four granddaughters, Morgan Mobley, Mackenzie Mobley, Kennedy Covington, and Carter Covington; and two great-granddaughters, Yara and Petra. Hence also leaves cherished memories with his godson, William Reddish III; his goddaughter, Carla Reddish; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and dear friends.

Throughout his life, Hence demonstrated a genuine spirit of faith, love, service, and devotion. From faithfully serving his country to sharing his musical talents and practical skills within the church, he gave generously of himself and used his many gifts to help others.

Hence Nathaniel Scranton lived a life that touched many. His love for his family, dedication to his faith, passion for music, and willingness to serve will remain part of the beautiful legacy he leaves behind. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories, lessons, love, and faith he shared will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
