Obituary

Gwendolyn Yvonne Tyner, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, at the age of 75. Gwen, daughter of Jarvis Tyner Sr. and Beatrice Tyner, was born on March 27th, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was raised and educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. Throughout her life, she brought humor, strength, and friendliness to everyone who knew her.

Gwen was a dedicated worker, beginning as a school clerical aid in Philadelphia. After moving to New York City, Gwen worked at the Henry Winston Unity Center, where she held various positions, including childcare assistant, elevator operator, and custodial worker. She also served as a home care attendant to the elderly. Gwen enjoyed caring for others, as well as listening to and dancing to music. At every family event, you could guarantee finding Gwen on the dance floor, "cutting a rug."

Even though Gwen had made a life in New York City, she never forgot where she came from. Gwen was "quick" to let you know she was from "West Philly" and would visit her children, family, and friends in Philadelphia frequently during holidays and birthdays. Coming home to Philly was something Gwen looked forward to doing. While there, she would enjoy some of her favorite foods such as Philly cheesesteak and butterscotch krimpets.

Gwen will be missed for her playful sense of humor and for not letting you forget that you were "in the front row." She will be remembered for her generosity, her love for her family, and her appreciation for her wonderful children. She cherished time spent with loved ones and carried herself with fortitude and spirit. Gwen leaves behind a legacy of resilience and courage that will continue to inspire all who shared in her life.

Gwen leaves to honor her memory her son, Travis Tyner (Dawn); her daughter Rhonda Beatrice Tyner Kennedy (Jarand); her granddaughter Emerson Rose Kennedy; her step-granddaughter Justine Jamsime Wilkins; her step great-grandson Rubin Bowens Jr.; her brother Jarvis Tyner Jr. (Lydia); her nephews, Nureldine Tyner, Colby Tyner, Micheal Tyner; and her niece Alia Tyner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jarvis Tyner Sr. and Beatrice Tyner, and her brother, famed jazz pianist McCoy Tyner; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lovingly Submitted,
The Family
