Frederick Leon Harris was born on May 2, 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth child of nine to the late Maxie L. and Evelyn L. Harris. Freddie, as he was affectionately called, was the only son. He was surrounded by eight sisters. Freddie was preceded in death by his oldest sister, Gwendolyn Harris- Cardwell. He received his education in the Philadelphia School District. Freddie loved and adored his sisters most of the time, but when he did something wrong, he would quickly find a way to blame one of them. He was very clever about arranging the setup. When he learned that child number nine was another girl, he cried, "I would rather have a dog." Even though Freddie made that statement, he really spoiled his youngest sister. Freddie and his older sisters were christened at an early age at Jones Tabernacle AME Church. Freddie was saved on February 14, 2009. As a young adult, Freddie worked in three industries: moving and storage, textiles, and the restaurant business. He made his career, however, by working at the Graterford Maximum Security Prison until he retired. When not in uniform, Freddie was always fashionably coordinated from head to toe in any outfit he would wear. Freddie met and married the love of his life, Vanessa Harris, on March 1, 1997. Nessie, as he affectionately called her, was his soul mate. He loved and cared for her dearly, so quite naturally, when his health declined, she did whatever was needed to reciprocate the gesture. Freddie leaves a legacy of love and memories to his wife: Vanessa, daughter, Monica (Bishop Matthew Haskell. Jr.); grandchildren, Lauren Haskell-Seaton (Edward), Shawn Morrison, Matthew Haskell III; sisters: Gloria Harris (Thomas), Brenda Baskin (John) of Fayetteville, NC, Maxine Cullum (Horace) of Stockbridge, GA, Barbara Harris, Vera Harris, Carolyn Harris, and Lynnette Carter (Albert), a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
