Obituary

EVELYN E. JOHNSON transitioned to her eternal reward on Monday, March 13, 2023, at her home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Squeaky, as she was lovingly called, was one of 12 children. She was born to the late Willie T. and Lucy Braxton on December 19, 1929, in Newton, Virginia.

At an early age she accepted the Lord into her heart and was baptized in the Old Mill Pond, as a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

She received her education at the King and Queen Training School, where she graduated second highest in her class.

On February 14, 1950, Squeaky became the proud mother of her only son, Anthony Stafford Hill, who preceded her in death.

In 1969, Squeaky accepted employment at Philadelphia General Hospital (PGH), where she worked until their doors closed in 1977. It was then that she embarked on her journey with the City of Philadelphia, where she persevered until her retirement in 1992.

Squeaky was joined in holy matrimony to Clyde C. Johnson, on September 12, 1970. This union rewarded her with a bonus daughter, Netasha Mendez-Vaz, who also preceded her in death.

In 1972, Squeaky joined White Rock Baptist Church, where she became an active member of the Gospel Chorus, the Sunday School Department, and the Sheepfold of Esther/Nehemiah/Roger Williams. She loved to sing. To hear her made you wonder if you were listening to the great Mahalia Jackson. She had a STRONG alto voice that made you want to rejoice along with her.

She loved life. It was a time well pleasing to the Lord. Her smile was infectious. The joy she carried in her heart was compelling. She was sassy, funny and most of all loving. Her family was important to her and there was nothing that she would not do to help anyone and everyone who stood in need. Her light was bright, and she never met a stranger. Her laughter, love, and resilience will be missed.

Squeaky leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted and loving husband of 52 years, Clyde; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Hill; granddaughter, Evelyn Brown (Scott); great- granddaughter, Troi Alexis; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Alsop, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her White Rock Church family.

Lovingly submitted,

The Family
