Obituary

ELSIE MAE DAWKINS was born on April 3, 1931 to Johnnie Mae Morris and Alfred Lee, Sr. Elsie was educated in the Philadelphia School System through her years in school. Elsie was an employee at the former Philadelphia General Hospital and enjoyed her career as a social worker. Elsie was a proud mother of 6 children and an even prouder grandmother of 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. "Nana", as many knew her by, was well-loved throughout many West Philadelphia neighborhoods. Despite her large family Elsie always made time for everyone. She always provided support and love for everyone she encountered. She would proudly boast about all of her babies and the impact they made forthgoing through her legacy. Nowhere in this family could you receive greater love than the love that Nana had for everyone. In December of 2011, Elsie was admitted to Saint Ignatius Nursing Home where she would spend the remaining years of her life. Even in her days at the nursing home, Nana continued to shower the staff, her family, and friends with love and encouragement. Some people only walk this earth for a certain period of time. Their departure reminds us that angels are always watching over us. On Friday, June 4, 2021, Elsie peacefully gained her wings and went home to rest eternally with her devoted grand-daughter Chanel right by her side. Elsie was preceded in death by her brother, Alfred Jr. and her son Ike (Herman Jr.). She leaves to cherish in her memory her daughters, Gloria, Patricia (Pat), Lisa and Gina (Mae Mae); her son, Luther; as well as her grandchildren, Renee', James (Jay), Dewitt, Yvonne, Richard, Genaro (Chucky), Chanel, Tashia, Lisa, Tiffany, Carletta (Pumkin), Darnell, Anthony and Rasson; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, beloved family, and dear friends.
