Anna Mae Clark was born July 25th, 1932 in St. Stephen Berkley County, South Carolina. The daughter of the late Julia Taylor and Charles McKnight. Her family was of the A.M.E Faith and at an early age the family fellow shipped and worshiped at the Allen Chapel Church of St. Stephen, South Carolina. The entire family moved to Philadelphia in the mid-1940s and lived with Julia's sister Ada Gates. Anna Mae received her education in both St. Stephen, S.C., and Philadelphia, PA school systems. She graduated from St. Stephen High School while working, attending school, and taking care of her mother and younger sister Alice.

Anna was joined in marriage to Leroy Clark later divorced and now deceased. There were no children from this union. While Anna Mae had no biological children of her own, she did share in the loving care of two children now adults Crystal and Winthrop Williams (Big Bee). Anna Mae loved children and doted on her great and grandnieces and nephews and God Child Jasmine Young. From time to time she would reach out in her travels to mothers on the streets and say "Miss Can I buy your little boy or girl?" She would say "I love children, all of them, black, yellow, green or white".

Anna Mae worked at a time in our history when black women particularly in the South, could only get work taking care of the homes and children of whites, and she did as her mother before her did. While she was offered a college education by one of the families, she refused "I had to take care of Mama". Eventually, Anna Mae did find work in Philadelphia, initially doing housework, but she applied to Presbyterian Hospital was hired, and quit because they were not paying her enough. She knew her worth. She later applied and was hired at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in the dietary department. She made many friends here. Mary Wallace and George Young- referring to him as her "Play Son" she was also nick-named "Tweety Bird" by her co-workers. Anna Mae retired from HUP in 1994 due to ill health. How can we remember her; She was fun and loving, looked out for her neighbors, and was very very clean. She loved to dance, and she loved to "BOP". The "BOP Queen" loved and helped her family especially her mother and two brothers before their deaths. Auntie was hard-working; we came from the back woods and were poor but determined and bought into the "American Dream" and made it with the help of God the Father. She was beautiful!!!

She was preceded in death by her mother and father Julia and Charles McKnight, brothers Jerome and Chandler McKnight, nephews Jeffrey Tolbert and Leroy Clark, and Aunt Ada Gates.
