Obituary

JANIE MAE MARTIN was born on March 14, 1924 to the late Marshall and Cora Henry. She was raised in Tuskegee Alabama, the second eldest of five children.
Janie received her formal education within the Tuskegee Public School System.
Growing up, Janie enjoyed country living and was a bit of a "tomboy". Her sister Annie Mary introduced her to her future husband, James Herbert Martin. On November 11, 1942, they wed and from that union seven children were born.
The family relocated to Philadelphia and Janie was employed with the Campbell Soup Company in Camden, New Jersey. However, for Janie nothing was more gratifying than becoming a homemaker and taking care of her family and home.
Janie's southern roots equipped her with superb cooking and baking abilities. Each child, grandchild, and great grandchild had a favorite dish or pastry and she never hesitated to make it for them. Many birthday parties, holidays, and celebrations were held in her house, a place the entire family felt was home. In her formative years, Janie had taken up several hobbies that included: Traveling and taking cruises, painting ceramics, watching "her" 76ers play, listening to spirituals by Mahalia Jackson and Shirley Caesar for inspiration, and most importantly gossiping and socializing with her beloved friend and next-door neighbor Mrs. Lulabelle Spencer.
"Mom" as she was affectionately called by just about everyone, was a nurturer, dependable, and always had words of encouragement for anyone needing uplifting. Janie had a calm and gentle demeanor, yet she was sharp and there wasn't too much that could get past her, which all her children knew. She was there to celebrate every success, celebration and graduation, she was there to put pieces back together even in troubled times. Janie was known for the extraordinary way she expressed her affection and concern for her family and she will be missed tremendously.
Janie was loved by many, she leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, James Martin Jr., Gregory Martin (spouse Deborah); five daughters Betty J. Henry, Shirley Ann Martin, Patricia Martin, Deborah Martin, and Vanessa Martin; One brother Ernest Henry; predeceased one sister Annie Mary Reed, two brothers Marshall Henry Jr., Willie Robert Henry; nineteen grandchildren, two predeceased; one brother-in-law. Alfonso Martin; two sisters-in-law, Rosalie Martin and Louise Pearson; a host of great grandchildren ; Great, great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, with a mention of one family member, Bernard Rivers. Janie will truly be missed by all.
